The Concept Explained By Experts

Please take your time to go through the provided material and videos. This will  help you to get a basic understanding of how to approach these dance lessons and to accomplish this course successfully.

Rebeca Mauleon

Rebeca Mauleon Explains the concept of  “LA CLAVE”. She was born in 1962, and is an American pianist, composer, arranger, and writer, specializing in Salsa and other Latin American, as well as Afro-Caribbean music.

PA-PA-PA---PA-PA = SIMULATION OF THE CLAVE

Grupo Niche

From the capital of Salsa "Cali", Grupo Niche, one of the best Salsa Groups worldwide. 3 different Singers of the group are dancing during their performance 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4 (8)

Salsa Piano 101

Imitation of the Metronome

This musician is doing the BPM with his left foot in the first part of the video, in the second part of the video, he is clapping on the piano. Practicing the dance steps with the "Metronome APP" is more efficient. Watch the dancer on the right corner he is stepping to the speed of the Metronome. Step to the 4 or the 8 (2 × 4) is the key and - if ‘used’ correctly - it will give you the spice of the Salsa rhythm!

Cuban Dancer

Spice up your salsa!

Look how spicy these Cuban dancers are moving to the rhythm of “TIMBA (Cuban Salsa)” by stepping and walking the 4 (8). With time you will start improvising harmonically in time to the rhythm of Salsa.

DANCE TO THE SPEED OF THE BPM!

If you dance to the correct BPM speed, you are dancing in time. Step every BPM!

La Clave

Let's start with the 3/2 CLAVE

CLAVE means 'Key' in Spanish

Your aim is to hack "LA CLAVE". It's something you can't explain, but if you finally get it - NOTHING can stop you while you are dancing Salsa, you will start improvising and start developing your own dance style like Maria.

CLAVE = CLAPPING

BEATS = STEPS (Step to each beat and you will be in time to music= BPM)

Definitions

  2. When you dance, you move your body and feet in a way which follows a rhythm, usually in time to music. (Collins English Dictionary)

BPM

Beats per minute, or BPM, is a term for measuring the tempo of a piece of music. “Tempo” is a musical term for the pace, or speed of a piece. Beats per minute is the unit of measurement for measuring tempo. A “beat” is the standard measurement for a length of a piece of music. Different pieces are written in different time signatures, and time signatures determine the value of a beat.

Musicians use the device to practice playing to a regular pulse.

The easiest way to learn how to feel Salsa is to follow the "Beat and tempo" of the music "Salsa Piano tutorial 101 ". Dancing is the translation of the music by moving harmonically and rhythmically to it. The count is: 1-2-3-4; 2 sequences of 4 = 8 Steps. Salsa beginners should do: Left Food: 1-2-3-4 Right Food: 1-2-3-4 (or 5-6-7-8).

Everything is about understanding a concept not by knowing it!
